Want Christina Aguilera's eyebrows?

Here's a shot of Christina taken at my house in Hollywood by photographer Ellen Von Unwerth for the cover of her "Back to Basics" CD:

Her eyebrows are normally darker and have been bleached but anyone with eyebrows that are not so bushy can achieve a refined look like this one.  Of course, they should be shaped to perfectly suit your face and in the near future I will post some tips on how to do that.
*My tip- when picking an eyebrow color it's better to go for a shade that's just slightly lighter than your natural tone.  Eyebrows that are too dark take away from your eyes and can make you look too severe.
Check out these great products:
First,  it's Shu Uemura's Eyebrow Gel.
They've been loving this product in Japan but it hasn't been available in the US until now.  What makes it really great is it's waterproof.  It's great for those of you who have very sparse or over tweezed eyebrows like Christina.  Or for those of you that like a very defined look to them.
This gel dries instantly and comes in 5 colors...it's $24 and available at:
http://www.shuuemura-usa.com/_us/_en/makeup/brows/eyebrow-gel.htm

Another great eyebrow product is made by Bare Escentuals.
They have a kit that comes with a brush, a shadow to fill in the brows and an eyebrow sealing gel.  This might be better for those of you who have a little more eyebrow to tame.  Also comes in five shades and it's $32.  Get it at:

Enjoy!

Salma Hayek's new cosmetics line...

I was wondering what she was up to after she was no longer with Avon and here's the answer. Can't wait to try her products! Buena suerte Salma!!!

Salma Hayek is already one of Hollywood’s most gorgeous stars, and the actress told People magazine that she plans to share her beauty secrets with a signature cosmetics collection that will keep the average woman’s budget in mind.
“I’m trying to develop a line with a drugstore so that it is affordable for everyone. We’ve researched for two to three years. My grandmother was a cosmetologist and she used to make her own creams, but my whole approach is how can we get the essence of the really expensive ones, but for everyone to be able to afford.”
But the details of the line are still under wraps. Hayek stopped herself, explaining, “I shouldn’t be talking about this!”
I'll keep you updated...

Latina Natural Makeup Look- light skin/brunette

Here's Mexican model Liliana Dominguez, showing how light eyed, brunette latinas can wear the look:

Below is Spanish actress Penelope Cruz in an ad for Loreal.. If you want to add more intensity to my look, you can add a little more eyeliner to the outer corners by blending the eyeliner out like we see here:
Here's a picture of Mexican American teen actress Selena Gomez wearing her version of my "Fresh and Glossy" look. Notice just one eye shadow color and how it brightens her whole face:

Light brunette
natural look
“morena clara”

This look works great for Latinas with darker hair but with lighter skin tones. The best way to know if this is you, is if you have the kind of skin that turns red in the sun. Also, if in the winter your skin takes on a “cool” or bluish hue.

This natural look I call “Fresh and Glossy”. To begin, I will share my application instructions. Be sure to check out my product recommendations that follow and feel free to leave any comments on the ones I recommend or share your own recommendations.

FACE:
Start with concealer as needed.
*my tip - apply concealer with your ring finger and make sure you warm it up on the back of your hand before you put it on.

Next, I suggest a light foundation. If it works for you, I really love mineral foundations. (remember, product recommendations to follow…) A lot of Latinas have oily skin and the mineral powders can work wonders. I like to apply it in light layers, concentrate in the areas where you need the most coverage.

EYES:
My favorite look for light skin brunettes is a brown/gold eye shadow. It can brighten up dark eyes by bringing out any amber or hazel tones. On blue or green eyes, the contrast makes them sparkle beautifully.

The key is to look for a color that is slightly darker than your lid color but with more radiance and depth than a matte tone. Once you find the right one you will love it instantly!

Appy the color on the lid and carry it up to the crease. Apply it also along the lower lash line.
*my tip- always apply the color to the outer corners of the eyes first and blend it in. The color will be softer in the inner corners making your eyes brighter!

I like a slightly shimmery shadow for this look but soft matte ones can also work.
Use an eyeliner of your choice. Steel/grey ones are pretty but soft black can work just as well.
And to finish the eyes, apply mascara.

CHEEKS:
A blush that combines a rosy hue with a radiant bronzer is the best way to perk up lighter skin. I love single compacts that combine blush, bronzer and highlighter.
*my tip- sweep the brush across the compact so that all the tones are present on the brush. Turn the brush when applying so that the darker tone goes in the hollow of the cheek while the lighter tone goes on the apple. You are highlighting and contouring in one step. Once you’ve applied it like this take the brush and blend them together for a very natural look.

LIPS:
To find the right color to finish a natural look, imagine the natural color of your lips but slightly intensified. Look for a color that combines pink with a touch of rosy brown.
*my tip-make sure that you don’t try lipstick on the back of your hand but actually on your lips. You want to make sure that the color works where you will apply it.

With this “Fresh and Glossy” look a lip gloss or a sheer creamy lipstick works the best. You might want to use the lipstick for a more professional look and change to the gloss for a fun look.

Latina Natural Makeup Look- light skin/blondes

Argentinian model and entrepreneur Valeria Mazza in one of my favorite shots of her:

Mexican singer Paulina Rubio showing her version of my "fresh and rosy" look on blonde hair/dark eyes:

There's one thing I know about most Latinas- they love their makeup and don't leave the house without it.   I wanted to come up with some makeup looks that were easy and that make a woman feel pretty but not made up...I'll be posting them according to skin tones and recommending products from different price ranges... Enjoy!

Here’s my favorite natural look for Blonde/light skin Latinas.  It involves mixing pinks with browns to get a modern and simple yet beautiful look.   Paulina Rubio and Valeria Mazza illustrate it very well.   They look like they have makeup on but it doesn't scream at you--it's pretty!  I call it “Fresh and Rosy”

On the face:
I recommend using as little foundation as possible, only using it to even out your skin.  One option would be a tinted moisturizer, which is typically a more diluted foundation.  A great one that I recommend is Mary Kay’s Tinted Moisturizer:
http://www.marykay.com/color/foundations/marykaytintedmoisturizerwithsunscreenspf20/default.aspx

You can also use a light concealer and powder application if necessary.  What I mean by necessary is if you have really dark under eye circles, or break outs.

Eyes:
For this look, all you need is one eye shadow.  Use a rosy eye shadow on the top lid and blend out to the crease of the eye.  By only using one shade of eye shadow and stopping just above the crease, you allow the brow bone to keep it's natural color.  This gives you contrast but emphasizes the "natural" appearance.
Make sure that the shade is not too pink but that it has some neutral browns/golds mixed in.
A soft pink color is great for green/blue eyes like on Valeria's.   Paulina's darker eyes look best with a more neutral pink that has gold and/or brown in it.

Here's a great compact from Dior.   I love the fact that it has different pinks so that you can choose the intensity and tone that's best for you.  It has a pink for everyone!   It’s also their best selling eye shadow palette.
http://beauty.dior.com/int/en/base.html#/en/woman/makeup/women-makeup-eyes/woman-makeup-eyes-eyeshadows/5-couleurs-5-colour-eyeshadow-22.html

Take a grey or soft black eyeliner and apply it at the base of the lashes blending it out with a brush or sponge applicator for a more natural diffused look.  Then use the same tool, with just the residue from the top lashes to apply a softer version under the eye but only going about ¾ of the way in toward your nose.

One product that I like for this application is from Maybelline.  It’s called Line Express and the color is Charcoal Grey.  I like the texture and also the other end of the pencil which helps to blend it easily.
http://www.maybelline.com/Product/Eye/EyeLiner/line-express-eyeliner.htm?referrer=search

Finish with mascara.

Cheeks:
A rosy/peach blush works best on lighter skin tones.   Don’t worry if it’s too dark as you can always add a little bit of loose powder to tone it down.   Smile and apply right at the apple of the cheeks.

Lips:
Want a trick for a gorgeous natural lip that lasts?  Fill in the lips all the way with a neutral lip liner and then add a bit of gloss over it.   A pink gloss would be really pretty and again a nice contrast to the neutral lip liner.

My favorite liner for years and years has been MAC’s Spice.  It looks amazing under a pink gloss.
http://www.maccosmetics.com/product/spp.tmpl?CATEGORY_ID=CAT167&PRODUCT_ID=340

But what pink gloss?  I have to give you my two favorites.
Mary Kay’s “Pink Diamonds” which I’ve used on just about every skin tone, is great.  It's not too sticky, doesn’t have a strong fragrance and wears really well.
Find it at:
http://www.marykay.com/color/lips/marykaynourishinelipgloss/10016963/default.aspx

Another one I’m really loving is Chantecaille’s Glee. The texture is amazing and the little applicator that comes with it is really nice.  This is a more expensive option.

Give it a try!   It's summer and you guessed it I'm loving everything pink right now....

pink lipstick- how to wear it

Everyone wants to know, can I wear pink lipstick?
Makeup artists tell you it looks great, especially in the summer but here are some of my recommendations...

First, I'll tell you that I'm always looking for the “right” pink. It can be hard to find a pink tone that doesn’t look too “bubble gum” but that is still pretty and soft. I have found that by mixing a little bit of a bright pink and adding a flesh toned lip gloss, I get the right result.

I think for most Latinas with yellow skin undertones, it is best to stay away from frosty pinks and embrace those with more deep purple in them.

In the past, I have also used a MAC color (I believe it is called Skew but it might have been discontinued!) which I thought was perfect. Also, I recommend Chanel for pretty pink lipsticks and glosses.

Vincent Longo’s Kitty would be pretty on a lighter, ivory skin tone. It seems to me not to have enough blue which might make it more wearable for morenas.
http://www.vincentlongo.com

YSL-4 has a beautiful texture, as I feel most of their lipsticks have.
It seems to be a bit bluer that Vincent’s but also a bit brighter. It is a fun color and would be a nice addition if you want to try out a semi-bright pink.
http://www.yslbeautyus.com

Shisheido-P16 is a great tone! It is a very pretty and wearable shade. It gives a woman the flexibility to make it funky by adding a bit of a shimmery lip gloss over it. Still, it can look professional and fashionable without the gloss.
http://www.shiseido.com

Mary Kay's Nourishine Lip Gloss is also great.  Goes on a little frosty but almost immediately turns into the prettiest most wearable pink.
http://www.marykay.com/color/lips/marykaynourishinelipgloss/10016963/default.aspx

Cheaper ones that still work are Cover Girl Triple Lipstick in Tutu, and Maybelline Wet Shine Lip Color in Mauvelous.

Hope all this helps.

Latina models I love! Argentinian Cecilia Mendez

From the Galliano show:

This girl is from Argentina and has been hitting the runways hard the last few seasons. I remember her with long hair, then she cut it into a bob and then in a super short "Mia Farrow" like pixie. She CAN walk!! And even opened the latest Ralph Lauren show.

From Wikipedia:
Cecilia Méndez (born April 21, 1986, in Buenos Aires, Argentina) is an Argentine fashion model currently residing in New York City.[1] An agent discovered Cecilia walking down the street in Buenos Aires.[4] She has appeared in runway shows for Alexander McQueen, Bottega Veneta, Burberry Prorsum, Chanel, Christian Dior, Dries van Noten, Issey Miyake, Marc Jacobs, Oscar de la Renta, Yohji Yamamoto and others.

Here are some cool shots of her...

White eyeliner-how to wear it

Here are two shots that show you how to use white eyeliner properly. The first one is of Jennifer Lopez showing how to wear the liner with a "smokier" eye look. The second is from a shoot I did which was published in July 2009's German Cosmopolitan magazine and shows it being used in a much more natural way.

They both show you how you can use it to make your eyes really "pop" My model had small eyes and it was really a good way to open them up and make them appear bigger. This trick works so well for all you Latinas with darker color eyes. You also can see how it works on Jennifer's eyes by making the white of the eyes appear bigger and her whole gaze brighter!

As far as the eyeliner itself, I really like using an old fashioned pencil one since the creamy versions don't wear as well. As far as brands go, Benefit has a nice one and also Paula Dorf. For my shoot I used a $3 white pencil by Rimmel London.

I recommend that you apply it in the inner part of the eye at the lower lashline. Using it all around the eye can be a bit too much. Also make sure you clean the pencil really well everytime you are going to be using it.

If it looks way to white for you there are also light pink ones that can work really well.
Give it a try...That's all I used on my model besides some mascara....

Shadow shields--Love these!

I had heard about "shadow shields" and had the opportunity to use them on a Beauty video not too long ago. They were actually seen on the video and not too long ago I got an e-mail from their creator Michelle Villanueva, who is also a makeup artist in California.

After using many tricks like powder under the eyes, applying concealer after being done with the eyeshadow, holding a powder puff under eye while applying color, etc, etc, etc These little pads rare a dream come true! Shadow shields are the easiest and cleanest way of doing heavy, smoky eyes and not turning the whole look into a "hot mess!"

You can order from her website:
www.shadowshields.com Or you can check them out at Sephora!

I like the fact that you can glue them pretty close up to the lash line so that it becomes really easy to do some beautiful bottom eyeliner looks and keep the whole thing very clean looking. I also think they're awesome for people who don't wear mascara because they get a "racoon" eye after applying it.

And don't be scared of the "glue" it comes off really easy....

Congrats Michelle for a great new product--I'll be using them a lot!

Luis in People in Espanol

I wanted to share this article that came out in People in Espanol. I was asked to comment on the 12 biggest makeup sins that celebrities make...

Here are some of my tips:

# 2- Avoid heavy and dark eyeliner-only few women can wear it....Instead opt for a fine line that's softened and blended.

#5- Want your small lips to look even smaller? Wear dark lipstick!

#7- (Lucia Mendes)- don't wear concealer that's too light. Instead choose one that's closer to your skin tone.

#9- Tone down heavy blush by applying a little bit of translucent powder over the strong color.

#12- Look at makeup the same way you look at Fashion-- we don't wear the same clothes we wore 10 years ago right? So change your makeup every now and then...

Enjoy!

Sonia Maria Sotomayor!

I might be a little late saying this but congratulations to Judge Sonya Sotomayor who was confirmed by the United States Senate on August 6, 2009, by a vote of 68–31, and she was sworn in by Chief Justice John Roberts on August 8. Sotomayor is the Court's 111th justice, its first Hispanic justice, and its third female justice!!!!!

Why is this a big deal you might ask and what do these judges do anyway? Well it's a huge deal to have a Latina Female so that she can share her point of view.
The duty of the Supreme Court is to interpret the law. The duties are to also say what is right and wrong . The Supreme Court is also the highest appellate court in the U.S. It's main functions are to interpret the Constitution and to examine every law passed whether federal or state and determine if said laws adhere to the Constitution of the United States.

So need I say more about how important her presence will be?

Now as far as makeup/hair goes, she adheres so far to a very conservative palette and seems to wear her hair naturally curly. I'd love to see her with her hair straight and some smokier eyeshadow- I don't know about all the gold she seems to wear all over her lids but as long as she is comfortable with her look-- I'm all over it! When are we going to see her on the cover of Latina???? Soon I hope!

Click on the first picture, it's from the Princeton yearbook, really like what she says.

Felicidades Judge Sotomayor!! and hey---call me :)!

latina models I love! Puerto Rican Joan Smalls!

Joan is Puerto Rican! and she came to New York in 2008. I remember seeing her in Diane Von Funsterberg's show and thought she was amazing.

She seems to have taken the runways by storm as she can be very classic looking (for Oscar de La Renta) to a wild Ghetto-chic (at Heatherette)

With that face and those legs I bet we'll be seeing her for a long time... Gorgeous boriquas rule!

Chanel eye gloss

Here's a must product that I will be trying out soon. I've been looking for an eye gloss that's not too sticky or that doesn't crease immediately after you put it on! This one has been getting great reviews and it comes in a compact with four very easy to wear colors.

I'll report back on this one but couldn't wait to share it with you!

kat von d---another cool latina!

I just posted a video of Kat discussing her Latina roots.  It is on another post from today.   She comes from Argentine parents but was born in Mexico.   She came to the US when she was 4 years old.
Kat got introduced to America with he TLC show LA ink. She also rocks that old Hollywood glam mixed with Punk sensibility that is so popular with some Latinas here in LA.
I have also commented on her makeup line sold at Sephora and here are some pictures of her (with and without tattoos)
Wikipedia says:
She credits the prominent Latino culture of Los Angeles as being a major influence in her art and style. She has a book compiling her artworks and tattoos, which was released in January 2009, called "High Voltage Tattoo". The book traces von D's career as an artist, from early childhood influences to recent work, along with examples of what inspires her, information about the show and her shop, her sketches, and personal tattoos. The book goes deep into tattoo process and culture: readers can see up close the pigments, the tools, and the making of complex, even collaborative, tattoos.

kat von d makeup!

While shopping at Sephora I noticed Kat's makeup line. I LOVE<>
I really like the eyeshadow palettes. "Beethoven" is the one with the purples--great texture and just the right amount of pigment to do some fun-going out looks!!
This is a palette that has so many good colors to use.  Try using the light blue color with a wet brush as an eyeliner-looks great that way.  I like the fact that it has the brown color to neutralize anything that might look too bright.  Talk about fun Quinceañera makeup!
The "Ludwig" (more natural) palette is awesome to do a great smoky eye.
And the liquid liners, wow! "Black metal love" is probably my fave (it's a matte black but with silver glitter in it) "Homie" is a cool violet-- this color will rock for those of you with brown eyes--try the violet!!!! I also like "Love Metal" a really sparkly silver which would look great even layered over her "tattoo liner".
I am also really wanting to try her "tattoo concealer" I just saw a video of her talking about it, hiding tattoos can be a challenge sometimes so it's worth a try...

Interesting Latina facts

"CHOLA FRIDA" image by: "Pearmama" from:
http://arteabla.ning.com/photo/chola-frida?context=latest
Art by Latina artists website.

I was at Univision.com in Miami last week filming some beauty videos (I'll post as soon as I get them) While looking through their website, I found some really interesting information regarding makeup and Latinas.

Here it is (Dated 8/11/2009)

Univision Communications unveiled new research that emphasizes the importance of beauty to Hispanic women and sheds light on the key drivers that directly influence Latinas’ purchasing decisions. The research is based on a national phone survey conducted by Simmons.

The research findings reinforced that beauty is of paramount importance to female Hispanic consumers – instilling confidence, making them feel younger and improving self-esteem, with many Latinas feeling outward beauty reflects inner beauty. Wearing makeup and looking good is essential to these consumers, moreso than their non-Hispanic counterparts. For example:

61% of Latinas (vs. 42% of non-Latinas) agree that “How I look on the outside projects the way I am on the inside.”
69% of Latinas (vs. 46% of non-Latinas) agree that “It’s very important to wear makeup and look good.”
40% of Latinas (vs. 23% of non-Latinas) agree that “When leaving the house I need to look as good as or better than my friends.”

Part of the reason for this is that beauty is a priority passed from Latina mothers to daughters, with 73% of Latinas (vs. 57% of non-Latinas) agreeing that “I influence my children to take care of their skin, hair, appearance” and 67% of Latinas (vs. 50% of non-Latinas) agree that “My mom influenced/influences me to take care of my skin, hair, appearance.”

This study also sheds light on the value that major beauty marketers achieve by using Spanish-language media to drive growth among Latinas. In fact, numerous beauty brands – including Avon, Caress, Cover Girl, Dove, Garnier, L’Oreal, Mary Kay, Maybelline, Olay and Pantene – are spending their ad dollars on Spanish-language media.

The study also revealed the cultural importance of beauty among Latinas. For example, price does not drive their purchase decision. Hispanic women expressed this through comments such as “If you like it, you buy it.” In fact:

68% of Latinas (vs. 56% of non-Latinas) agree that “Price isn’t the most important factor – it’s getting exactly the beauty products I need.”
58% of Latinas (vs. 47% of non-Latinas) agree that “I often associate better quality with brand name products.”
49.5% of Latinas said they would be enticed to try a new product if they received an in-store demonstration, more than four times higher than the 11.9% of non-Hispanic women who responded in the same way.

Fall 2009 makeup trends

Ok, chicas. Here's the latest from the Fall 2009 Runways... Here are my favorite looks from the Fall 2009 Runways. It's time to try something slightly new, come on--makeup is also like your wardbrobe-don't you get bored of doing things always the same way?

The big trends in Makeup were:
-Gray- HUGE deal on clothing and makeup. It's definately the new black! Silvery/gray eyeshadow and eyeliner were the biggest makeup story for the season.
-Modern Somoky eye- On some shows we saw no eyeliner and again charcoal grays on the eyes for a smoky effect. Another trend? Makeup artists at Zac Pozen and Narciso Rodriguez actually used gloss in the middle of the eyelid when doing a smoky eye. How can you do that? add a dab of light shimmery shadow in the middle of the lid after you are done with the rest of the eyes.
-Modern Romantic look- Carolina Herrera really embraced it by using a "shimmery pigment on eyes and cheekbones" (remember shimmer and not heavy shine!) It just means that you can obtain it by using a highlighting type cheek and eye color with a bit of sparkle.
-Creamy lids with texture
-Lilac! at Jason Wu, we saw pinks and purples on the lips. Gucci Westman (makeup artist for the show) called it "think of Cate Blanchett in The Lord of the rings." ***Don't be scared if you have darker skin just stay away from "bubble gum" like pinks and fuschias.

Overall, this was a "pretty" season for makeup. The only exxagerated looks were the 80's in which we saw everything from Cindy Lauper like neon to a strong, sexy woman at Marc Jacobs. Also we saw (again) red lips but it seems that pinkish red was the fashionable tone.

To me Fall 2009 was a "happy" season that overall embraced femininity. It is one of the few times in which I feel a "real" woman can actually wear the makeup that was shown at the collections. Signs of the economy or maybe just plain realism?
