Shu Uemura exits US market...

Loreal USA who owns a 35% stake in Shu Uemura announced today that it will close US operations for the Shu Uemura brand due to the low sales during the Recession.  This change will not affect the foreign market.

Loreal's luxury portfolio includes Lancome, YSL, Giorgio Armani, Ralph Lauren, Khiel's and fragrances like Viktor & Rolf and Diesel.

So now you'll have to go to their website to get their famous eyelash curlers, cleansing oils and amazing fake eyelashes.  Sad we won't be able to try them at a store anymore!

Using highlighter to refine your features

Here's a preview of a shot I recently did for a magazine on behalf of Mary Kay.  I really wanted to share it with you as I get asked so many times how to use highlighters and since this look was all about glow I thought I'd share the steps. we were concerned that the models eyebrows were very straight.  Therefore I sued a Maky Kay Facial Highlihtng pen to help to accentuate the thngs we want to see the most.
Since the model lacked an arch on her eyebrow I used the Mary Kay Facial Highlighting pen $18 at:
http://www.marykay.com/color/facialhighlightingpen/facialhighlightingpen/default.aspx
I used it on her brow bone to start to give her eyebrows a bit of shape by illuminating the area underneath them.  I used shade #2
I then applied it above the eyebrow.  I really like this highlighter because it is not too extreme, it doesn't give you an unrealistic shine but really it just gives a nice glow.  Also it is very easy to apply as you can use it directly from the applicator or apply it with your fingers.
I then applied it on the bridge of her nose and right above her blush.  Easy!  and no way to mess it up!

On the eyes:
Mary Kay Eyesicles in Island Bronze-Love this cream to powder product applied with the fingers. $10:

Mary Kay liquid eyeliner Black. $11

On the cheeks:

On lips:
My favorite red lipstick right now.  Mary kay's "Red" $13

it has a beautiful texture and it looks great on just about anyone.

The new -edgy- Estee Lauder!

Makeup artist Tom Pecheux is the new creative makeup director at Estee Lauder and as such has created a new direction for their Pure Color cosmetics.

Starting this fall, look for a revamped Estee Lauder full of vibrant tones, heavy pigmented and with more fashion-oriented colors.  It's supposed to be more like MAC, Nars and Makeup up For Ever.

If it's anything like the beautiful texture blue eyeshadow he showed at Derek Lam's Fall 2010 show (his first show for Estee Lauder during fashion week)  then I say it's going to be very cool!

Look for 48 new Eyeshadows launching in August and Pure Color Glosses coming in June.

latina models I love! Rose Cordero

Dominicanas are tearing up the Fashion world right now!  Not only was  Rose Cordero one of the busiest models this show season walking in shows such as Rodarte, Marc Jacobs, Louis Vuitton, 3.1 Phillip Lim and Max Mara (to name a few)  but she also was French Vogue's first black cover girl in 8 years!

Personally I find her look is wonderfully fresh.  Love her natural texture hair.  She is 5'10" and has amazing hazel eyes.

She was discovered as a volleyball player in The Dominican Republice where a man approached her about modeling.  Turns out that the man that she ran away from was the biggest model scout in her country.  Rose didn't call him for a year until her aunt had seen him on TV talking about modeling.

Diversity rules and so does this Latina!!!

Besides the pictures also check out this cute video of Rose with another one of my favorite latina models (Cecilia Mendez) who I've blogged about before; they are both represented by Supreme Model Management in New York.

Luis' tips in People en EspaƱol March 2010 issue

In this issue I tell you my favorite eyeshadows for different eye colors.  Here are some of my tips:

On Latinas with brown eyes like Thalia:
My favorites are copper, purple, gray, metallic gold and bronze.  As far as eyeliner stay away from  pink and mauve.

Here are some great ones:
Mary Kay Mineral eye color in Amber Blaze-  it really is the perfect copper/bronze, try it you'll LOVE it!  $6.50:

On blue eye Latinas like Karla Monroig:
I like Gray, violet, purple and deep blue (almost blue-black)  Also silver and turquoise which will brighten the blue in the eyes.

One to try is Illamasqua's in "Involve" shimmer.. wow- the texture is amazing and it's so versatile.  It can be applied with a brush for a cool wash of color or use a "mixing medium" or even eye drops to make it really bright. $24 at Sephora:

Celebrating Selena!!

March 31 of this year marks the 15th anniversary of the death of Selena Quintanilla.  After living in Texas for a while in the 90's I experienced  the phenomenon that Selena had become and was definitely sad when the Latino community lost such a positive role model and ultimately icon.  Whether you liked her music or not, Selena was truly a Latina beauty who had a bright future ahead of her.  I'm happy that at least she won a Grammy award while still alive.

Just imagine where Selena would be in the music industry today?

Que descanses en paz Selena!!!

Here are some of my favorite pictures of her as well as video of one of her last interviews and live performances.

Makeup looks on Latinas at the 2010 Oscars

Penelope looks like a movie star with neutral tones on her eyes/lips.  Like her with a little smokier eye but this look also works on  her.

Where's that "glow" Jennifer?  I think she looks pretty but a little pale and washed out.  A little sparkle on her cheeks would have been nice.

Zoe's dress was very "avant garde" so I'm glad she stuck to a simpler make up look.  Love the texture right under her brows.  Also the way the eyeshadow is applied looks modern and fresh.

Mariah keeps it simple- but maybe too simple?  She's made a lot of "worst dress" lists for her choice of gown and the makeup could have had a little more punch.  Maybe just a tad bit darker eyes and cheeks.

Cameron's makeup artist went for a Veronica Lake look.  It is a nice look for her.  Loved the red lips.

Behind the scenes at Karl Lagerfeld's "Latin Lover" Buenos Aires shoot

I must say that Buenos Aires is one of my favorite cities in the world and these shots that Karl Lagerfeld took for the Chanel Spring 2010 campaign really embody what the city is all about to me.  The shots have that old world feel but with a Latin twist.  Love the clothes and the casting is amazing (even though I wish he would have used at least one Latina!)  The boy is French model Baptiste Giabiconi and the girl with the short hair is Danish beauty of the moment Freja Beha and of course German supermodel Claudia Schiffer looks amazing with her bangs.

Here are some "behind the scenes" shots as well as some of the best shots from the Spring 2010 Chanel Catalogue.  Most of these will not be ads seen in magazines so enjoy!
And now the finished shots:
