Podwer or dry shampoo? Yes-it works!

Have you ever wondered how to get that "tousled" full look to your hair?  Does your hair usually look better after not washing it for a few days?  Well, you can really get that look with a "powder" shampoo.
I remember seeing hair stylists using baby powder and their own mixes a lot at fashion shows but now there are much better options.
For instance a company called Sharmooz has created a product called "Shampowder"  It absorbs oil and adds extra thickness and volume to the hair.  I also like the fact that it comes in different tones and that it has an applicator brush attached to it.  Easy to use without making a mess.

Mexican Fashion designer Christian Cota gives back!

Manhattan-based, Mexican-born designer Christian Cota has been a fixture on the NYC benefit circuit—and has dressed his fellow philanthropist beauties—since he started with a small line of delicate evening gowns and separates in 2008. Now he has set his sights on one cause in particular: Wine to Water (winetowater.org), a charity that helps provide clean drinking water to impoverished communities around the world. The 29-year-old launches Agua Cota, a capsule collection of bamboo silk jersey and linen sundresses, with 25 percent of the proceeds going directly to the foundation. Cota also recently produced locally sourced, eco-friendly raffia bracelets for the Paradisus Resort in the Dominican Republic, where he traveled to creatively recharge for his fall 2010 collection

Here's Christian during his Fall 2010 presentation:

Rodarte and MAC Mexican inspired Fall collection (UPDATED 7/20)

The Mulleavy sisters of Rodarte  (who by the way are of Mexican descent) have collaborated with MAC  to create a collection, which launches on September 15.  It is inspired by Mexico's colors and culture, and the products are named accordingly. For example, one pink blush is called Quinceañera, while a sheer white lipstick is called Ghost Town and even a frosty pink nail polish called Juarez.

They said that a drive from El Paso to Marfa TX inspired their fall 2010 collection which in turns inspired the makeup collection.  The pale look of the models on their runway (think Karen Elson walking the altar inspired runway in a "sarape" inspired sweater with dark eyes and super pale skin) had a feeling of a "dia de los muertos" art installation. Even some of the evening wear was inspired by "Quinceñeras".    I'm looking forward to the line and here are some just released pictures of the products.

******UPDATE.
After many complaints against MAC's use of the word "Juarez," MAC released the following:
We understand that product names in the M·A·C Rodarte collection have offended some of our consumers and fans. This was never our intent and we are very sorry. We are listening carefully to the comments posted and are grateful to those of you who have brought your concerns to the forefront of our attention. M·A·C will give a portion of the proceeds from the M·A·C Rodarte collection to help those in need in Juarez. We are diligently investigating the best way to do this. Please be assured that we will keep you posted on the details regarding our efforts.

 ********ANOTHER UPDATE:
Today MAC sent around an e-mail to editors saying that they planned to change the names of products in the Rodarte collection coming out in September.  Yes bloggers you spoke out and MAC took notice!

In case you don't know, Juarez (or Ciudad Juarez, Mexico) is the site of widespread poverty and violence, including an infamous series of unsolved murders of female factory workers (maquiladoras). The violence generated by the narco wars translated into some 6,000 killings in 2008. More than 1,600 of them occurred in Juárez, three times more than the most murderous city in the United States. And that number of killings increased to 2,600 in 2009.

*************YET ONE MORE UPDATE
MAC has canceled the Rodarte line!

RIP Olga Guillot- Another latina diva!

Olga Guillot passed away today of a heart attack at 86 years old at Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami beach.  She was known as the "queen of the bolero".   I remember being a little boy and meeting her once with my parents- she was so glamorous (I remember we were in El Salvador and she was actually wearing a fur!)

My mom was a huge fan of hers and all I can say is she was like the Latin Aretha Franklin with a little Judy Garland mixed into it.  She was a cuban like Celia Cruz but with an edgier persona and super dramatic acting abilities.  At 20 she actually performed with Edith Piaf and she was the first Latina ever to perform at Carnegie Hall.

She was also a beautiful woman who seemed to LOVE makeup and fashion.  Her lips were always bright and shiny...lots of eyeliner and who can forget that darkened mole on her right brow bone? Glam!

Olga-  your music will always live on...

Check her out in full 1970's garb in this video:

hair and makeup at the Fall 2010 couture shows in Paris

In a economy when most people are talking about Couture being "dead" some designers are still having fun.   So far the makeup hasn't been too crazy but some shows do stand out from the rest.

Here are some looks from yesterday and today's shows.

Creativity always reigns at Christian Dior- hair was incredible!
A soft pink eyeshadow was placed on the lid and then mixed on the crease with a smoky gray and blended out to silver... nothing on the lower lids.  Cool!
Eyes, eyebrows, lips- nothing is too much usually at Gaultier's show.
The look at Chanel.  Simple- red lips.
And the epitome of chic makeup defiance- red lips that look like they were smeared off at Maison Martin Margiela

Best tips for sparkling eyes~!

Want to do eyeshadow like this?  try a cream eyeshadow!  Look at this shot of Argentinian model Jorgelina (cool eye color right?)  Try these to get that effect:

They are sold at Sephora and they have 20 great colors!  They claim that they don't crease and I've tried a couple at a shoot and was amazed at their staying power.   I used them under a powder eyeshadow and also under glitter.  The creamy texture helps to keep it from moving around and getting all over your face.
They come in blues, purples, plums, corals and even fuschia as well as very wearable taupes and beiges.
